The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah discussed a Master's thesis titled "Comparative Protective Effect of Milk Thistle and Royal Jelly Against Imipramine-Induced Hepatotoxicity" presented by the student Dania Ahmed Majid.
The thesis involved randomly dividing 36 white Wistar rats into six experimental groups: Control group, Imipramine-treated group, Milk Thistle + Royal Jelly group, Milk Thistle + Imipramine group, Royal Jelly + Imipramine group, and the triple treatment group (Milk Thistle + Royal Jelly + Imipramine). All treatments were administered orally for 28 days.
Liver damage was evaluated by measuring serum liver enzymes (ALT and AST), oxidative stress markers including malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH), and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-10), alongside comprehensive histopathological examination of liver tissues.
The study aimed to evaluate and compare the protective effects of Milk Thistle and Royal Jelly, both individually and combined, against Imipramine-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
The findings demonstrated that both Milk Thistle and Royal Jelly possess significant hepatoprotective effects against drug-induced toxicity by modulating oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways. Furthermore, their combined administration provided enhanced liver protection, indicating a potential synergistic effect that can be utilized to prevent drug-induced hepatotoxicity.
