The Pharmaceutical Chemistry Branch at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a workshop titled (Structure and Operating Principles of Gas Chromatography GC and GC-MS and Their Applications in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Analysis). The discussion seminar included a theoretical-practical lecture delivered by Dr. Hussein Nasser Khalaf Al-Salman, in which he explained the operating principles of the Gas Chromatography GC device and the GC-MS device coupled with a mass spectrometer, reviewing its main components such as the sample injector, separation column, and detector.
He also clarified the mechanism of separating volatile compounds and identifying them quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as the factors affecting measurement accuracy such as temperature, column type, and carrier gas flow rate. Focus was placed on the applications of the device in analyzing pharmaceutical and chemical samples, detecting impurities, and identifying residual solvents. The session concluded with a practical demonstration of the steps for sample preparation, device operation, and results interpretation. The workshop aimed to familiarize students and faculty of the College of Pharmacy with the fundamentals of GC and GC-MS operation and their pivotal role in ensuring the quality, efficacy, and safety of pharmaceutical preparations, in order to develop the analytical skills of students and researchers and enable them to use advanced analytical techniques in graduation projects and scientific research in a manner that serves the requirements of the labor market and pharmaceutical regulation.
