The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah has successfully defended a Master's thesis entitled:

"Synergistic Anti-inflammatory and Hepato-renal Protective Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid with Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs"

The thesis, presented by student Ibrahim Wahid Kadhim, investigated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) when used alone and in combination with Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).

The efficacy of Alpha-Lipoic Acid was evaluated in various experimental models of inflammation and pain, with comparisons made against a range of NSAIDs. The study assessed the effect of these treatments on prostaglandin levels, a key mediator in the inflammatory and pain response.

Additionally, the gastroprotective, nephroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid during NSAID administration were evaluated. The assessments included measurement of biochemical markers, as well as histological examination of the liver and kidneys to determine the extent of damage and the protective impact of the treatments.

The study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic efficacy of Alpha-Lipoic Acid, investigate its synergistic effect when combined with NSAIDs, and assess its protective role in mitigating the adverse effects that NSAIDs may cause to the stomach, liver, and kidneys.

The significance of this study lies in the potential utility of Alpha-Lipoic Acid as an adjunct agent to enhance the therapeutic effect of NSAIDs and improve their efficacy. Its use as a co-adjuvant may also help reduce the side effects associated with these drugs — particularly on the gastric mucosa, liver, and kidneys — and opens avenues for future studies exploring its role as a safer adjunct therapy.
