Master's Thesis Defense: "Preparation and Evaluation of Ticagrelor-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles In Vitro and Ex Vivo"

 

The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah successfully defended a Master's thesis submitted by student Ayat Faraj Noor, entitled "Preparation and Evaluation of Ticagrelor-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles In Vitro and Ex Vivo".

The thesis encompassed the preparation and evaluation of 39 pharmaceutical formulations of Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) for the poorly soluble and poorly permeable drug Ticagrelor, utilizing the Microemulsion Template technique along with efflux pump inhibitory excipients.

The study aimed to enhance the Oral Bioavailability and intestinal absorption of Ticagrelor through its incorporation into solid lipid nanoparticles, and to overcome the dual challenges of poor solubility and low permeability that classify the drug under BCS Class IV.

Results demonstrated a 3.3-fold increase in drug permeability and intestinal flux compared to the raw drug, thereby enhancing therapeutic efficacy, improving dosing safety, and reducing the required oral dose to achieve effective therapeutic blood concentrations — offering a systemic solution for the prevention of thrombosis and thromboembolic events in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome. The biocompatible and biodegradable nanoformulation yielded particles with a homogeneous size distribution.
