Small Hands... Big Challenges: Living with Type 1 Diabetes
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a scientific workshop titled "Small Hands... Big Challenges: Living with Type 1 Diabetes." The workshop was presented by Lecturer Safaa Kifah, and examined the challenges faced by children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and the significant psychological impact of the condition on their families.
Lecturer Safaa Kifah addressed the most common emotional responses experienced by families following diagnosis — including fear, anxiety, and confusion — and underscored the pharmacist's central role in health education, practical training, and the provision of psychological support. The workshop also highlighted modern technologies such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices and insulin pumps, and their practical application in the daily management of the disease.
The workshop offered practical guidance for parents at home, at school, and during illness, affirming that education, dedicated support, and collaborative teamwork among pharmacists, healthcare teams, and families enables children with Type 1 Diabetes to lead full, healthy, and normal lives. Raising community awareness, it was concluded, is key to reducing complications and improving the long-term quality of life of patients and their families.
Workshop Objectives:
- To educate healthcare providers and families on the effective management of Type 1 Diabetes in children through proper training and psychological support.
- To increase patient and family confidence in self-managing the condition and reduce fear and complications through targeted health awareness.
- To improve glycemic control through the adoption of modern technologies including continuous glucose monitors and insulin pump systems.
- To enhance the long-term quality of life of children living with Type 1 Diabetes and their families through comprehensive supportive care.
