Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled "Some Facts About Nutrition." The lecture was presented by Dr. Osama Hamed Ramadan.
The seminar included a review of some nutrition concepts, the most important nutrients needed by the human body, in addition to non-nutritional substances found in foods, whether they are harmful substances like preservatives, or beneficial ones like antioxidants. The seminar also explained the most important factors affecting nutrition, such as genetic factors, the ecosystem, and family lifestyle.
The seminar also clarified some genetic nutritional diseases or dietary patterns that lead to the activation of genes affecting the function of certain metabolic enzymes. These enzymes work to convert the amino acid phenylalanine to tyrosine. In the case of a genetic defect, phenylalanine accumulates to become a toxic compound that causes Phenylketonuria (PKU), which leads to delayed overall growth and delayed brain development in children.
