Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The Department of Laboratory Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, held a seminar titled "Cholesterol and its Relationship with Cardiovascular Diseases." The lecture was delivered by Dr. Qutaiba Abdul Kareem.
The seminar included an explanation of the importance of cholesterol and its benefits to the body, as well as its relationship to atherosclerosis and heart attacks. It aimed to correct the misconception that cholesterol is harmful and causes heart attacks. Recent studies over the past few years have concluded that heart diseases and heart attacks do not have a direct relationship with blood cholesterol levels, and there is no study proving otherwise.
On the other hand, recent studies have confirmed that cholesterol is very beneficial to the body and plays a major role in protecting it from many diseases, including cancer, bacterial infections, and others.
Among the important recommendations addressed in the lecture is the necessity of consuming sufficient amounts of cholesterol-containing foods due to its many vital functions. These include the formation of the cell membrane for most cells, assisting in the production of vitamin D and male and female sex hormones, in addition to its crucial role in the digestion and absorption of fats in the intestines.
