Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, held a seminar titled "Study of the Effect of the Alkaloid Compounds Iso-quinoline and Beta-Carboline Isolated from Oak Bark (Jift) on the Viability of Visceral Leishmania Parasite In Vitro and In Vivo in Laboratory Mice." The lecture was delivered by Dr. Suha Haitham Mohammed.

The seminar included an explanation of a study on the oak plant and the properties possessed by its active substances, such as alkaloids, phenols, and terpenes, against the visceral Leishmania parasite, known locally as the Baghdad boil.

The seminar aimed to explore the treatment of parasitic skin diseases like the Baghdad boil and visceral diseases like Kala-azar (black fever) in children using herbal remedies. Because treatment with chemical drugs such as ointments has side effects and toxicity, this study relied on plant extracts like oak bark (Jift) to treat such ulcers.
