Teaching staff from the College of Pharmacy publish a paper in an international journal on a new antibiotic, the first in Iraq

Postgraduate student in pharmaceutical chemistry Ahmad Talal Ali , Dr. Mazen Nazem Musa, Dr. Zuhair Ghaleb Al-Shaheen and Dr. Munther Abdul-Jalil Muhammad, teaching staff at the College of Pharmacy at University of Basrah published a paper (Synthesis, Characterization and Antibacterial Evaluation of Oxoazitidine Benzene Sulfonamide Derivatives as Hybrid Antibiotics In a magazine (Systematic Reviews in Pharmacy Indians with an Impact Factor of 1.6 and within Scopus containers Q2 . The research included synthesizing a new antibiotic effective against a group of Gram-negative bacteria as well as the penicillin-resistant pseudomonas bacteria, as the target compound to be synthesized is a hybrid molecule of a sulfonamide structure and a heterocyclic beta-lactam, both of which are known with antibacterial activity and can kill or inhibit the production of the target bacteria. The research is to manufacture a new antibiotic consisting of two parts, a beta-lactam part for penicillin and a sulfone amide part from another antibiotic to eliminate penicillin-resistant bacteria.
