The research involved studying the long-term effects of prostaglandin inhibition on reproduction that are unknown despite the commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  The current study was designed to evaluate the effects of subchronic low and high doses of mefenamic acid alone or in combination with diclofenac sodium on reproductive performance of rats.
The findings of the researchers revealed that administration of low or high doses of mefenamic acid has a negative effect on the female reproductive system in rats, as evidenced by hormonal and biochemical changes in addition to histological changes in the ovaries.
