Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled "Human Gene Therapy," in a lecture presented by Dr. Ahmed Najm Abboud.
The seminar included an explanation of several topics, including a general introduction to the importance of this therapy in genetic diseases, its types, the methods of delivering the beneficial and useful gene to diseased and cancerous cells, and the most important vectors used, whether viral or non-viral.
It also reviewed the most important products marketed globally since the early 1990s up to the present, and their successes in human trials for various diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, myasthenia, congenital blindness, and cancer. Most of these treatments are characterized by high costs due to their therapeutic value and the research duration required to discover, develop, and market them. It was also noted that most of these products have been registered and used in developed countries and by international organizations responsible for food and drug administration.
