A master's thesis at the College of Pharmacy examines the isolation of khelin from the khila plant.

A master's thesis at the College of Pharmacy / Branch of Pharmacognosy at the University of Basrah, entitled "Separation and Isolation of Khalin from the Iraqi Khila plant and assaying the biological activity of isolated Khalin" by Raafat Muhammad Abdullah. The thesis dealt with the study of the Khila plant collected from Sulaymaniyah Governorate / Halabja District and the extraction of the aerial parts with different solvents. Then separate and characterize the Khalin material using TLC, HPLC, and GC-MASS techniques. The thesis included measuring the biological activity of the Khalin, including the activity against bacteria, the anti-cancer activity, and the antioxidant activity. The thesis concluded that methanol, as a solvent, extracts the highest percentage of vinegar and that Khalin has a remarkable activity as an anti-oxidant and anti-cancer, while the activity against bacterial isolates was weak.
