A lecturer at University of Basrah has got a Ph.D from the University of Kiel, UK

Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:

Faculty member at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah, Dr. Wafaa Abdul Nabi Fleifel, obtained her PhD for her thesis titled "A urinary proteomics investigation of pregnancy-related complications" from Keele University in the UK.

The thesis included an introductory overview of preeclampsia and the complications of this sudden disorder, such as Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), and the problems associated with this disease before and after birth for both mother and child. According to World Health Organization (WHO) reports, these disorders cause lifelong health, social, and financial problems for patients and for healthcare centers specializing in maternal and neonatal care.

The latest studies and research on this topic were reviewed, noting that until the moment this research was conducted, no effective biological markers had been identified to help diagnose these disorders early in pregnancy.

The study aimed to use the latest laboratory methods to determine early proteome changes in pregnant women who would later develop preeclampsia, such as combining iTRAQ Labeling technology with Mass Spectrometry (MS). The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated the qualitative and quantitative identification of altered proteins after comparing them with uncomplicated pregnancies at (15) weeks of gestation. These results may assist health centers in the early diagnosis of preeclampsia, especially for first-time pregnant women who will develop preeclampsia later and have no previous medical data. It also aids in the early detection of preeclampsia using urine samples for analysis and diagnosis, thereby helping to reduce mortality rates.
