The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah held a seminar titled "Semaglutide for Improving Glycemic Control in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes," in a lecture presented by Dr. Rawnak Adel Yaseen Al-Adhab.

The seminar included an explanation of Type 2 Diabetes as a progressive chronic disease that leads to high blood sugar levels, which can subsequently cause long-term complications including coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy.

The lecture highlighted the latest blood glucose-lowering treatments for Type 2 Diabetes, including Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which have shown cardiovascular protection in recent studies. It also discussed the drug Semaglutide, which reduces cumulative blood sugar (HbA1c) levels and body weight without causing hypoglycemia as a side effect. It provides protection against cardiovascular diseases, is safe for use by a large segment of patients, and is administered once a week via subcutaneous injection.
