Discussion Panel Held on "The Link Between Memory Impairment and COVID-19"

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a scientific session titled "The Relationship Between Memory Impairment and COVID-19."

The panel featured a lecture by Dr. Maisa'a Bannai, discussing research that links COVID-19 to long-term neurological symptoms, such as attention deficit and cognitive decline, persisting years after initial infection. The session detailed the virus's direct impact on the hippocampus (memory center) and how chronic inflammation triggers localized brain atrophy.

The primary goal was to raise awareness about "Long COVID" and its neural implications. Practical advice was provided to mitigate risks, including cognitive exercises, regular physical activity to increase cerebral blood flow, reading, and consistent sleep to prevent the protein accumulation responsible for neuronal dysfunction.
