College of Pharmacy Examines Pathophysiology and Treatments of Diabetic Wound Healing to Reduce Amputation Risks

The Pharmacology and Toxicology Branch at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized an advanced scientific seminar entitled "Diabetic Wound Healing: Pathophysiology and Treatment," to explore modern therapeutic interventions aimed at mitigating the severe complications of diabetes.

The seminar dynamically featured a specialized technical lecture delivered by Dr. Maysa Bannai, systematically addressing the clinical obstacles leading to delayed wound healing in diabetic patients—a major problem that exacerbates health conditions and may, in severe cases, lead to limb amputation. The lecture demonstrated that this condition is intrinsically influenced by a set of complex physiological factors, primarily the reduction of blood flow and oxygen to wound tissues, and chronical high glucose levels that negatively reflect on the functional efficiency of immune system cells.

Furthermore, the discussion analyzed the phenomenon of chronic inflammation persisting beyond natural timeframes and the functional dysfunction affecting core immune cells such as neutrophils, monocytes, and mast cells, in addition to the general immune weakness experienced by diabetic patients globally. The seminar primarily aimed to explore new horizons for therapeutic interventions in the medical field and develop advanced care protocols that contribute to accelerating the healing process and significantly reducing the risk of clinical aggravation in these cases.
