The College of Pharmacy organizes a panel discussion on the safe use of orforglipron

The Clinical Pharmacy Branch at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a discussion seminar titled (Efficacy and Safety of Once-Daily Oral Orforglipron (ACHIEVE-3 Study) - Research on Non-Peptide GLP-1 Receptor Agonists). The seminar included a lecture delivered by lecturer Rania Ouda Ali, in which she reviewed the ACHIEVE-3 study, a multicenter Phase 3 study that compared the new generation Orforglipron — a small non-peptide molecule that requires no fasting — against the older generation Semaglutide.

The results showed the superiority of Orforglipron in reducing cumulative HbA1c by -1.91% vs -1.47%, achieving weight reduction of -9.2% vs -5.3%, and reaching 76% of patients to the target of <7%, with a safety profile similar to the drug class, represented by gastrointestinal symptoms and a slight increase in heart rate, with no serious hepatic cases.

The lecture aimed to evaluate the non-inferiority and superiority of the new oral Orforglipron (12 and 36 mg) compared to oral Semaglutide (7 and 14 mg) in terms of efficacy and safety over 52 weeks in 1698 patients with type 2 diabetes.
