The College of Pharmacy organizes a seminar on the synthesis and cytotoxicity evaluation of anthraquinone derivatives.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a panel discussion entitled: "Computational Studies, Synthesis, and Cytotoxicity Evaluation of Novel Anthraquinone-2-Heterocyclic Derivatives."
The session featured a lecture delivered by Dr. Mazin Nadhim Mousa, in which he demonstrated the synthesis of a series of fifteen novel hybrid compounds derived from anthraquinone through several chemical steps starting from anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized using Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Proton and Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H & 13C-NMR), and Mass Spectrometry (MS). The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the compounds was evaluated using the MTT assay against two cancer cell lines and one normal cell line.
The objective of this study was to design and synthesize novel derivatives of anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid linked to heterocyclic rings (1,3,4-oxadiazole, 1,2,4-triazole, and 1,3,4-thiadiazole), and to evaluate their anticancer activity using integrated computational modeling techniques and in vitro biological evaluations.

The computational results revealed that the synthesized compounds exhibit strong and stable binding affinities toward the Topoisomerase enzyme. Furthermore, biological investigations demonstrated high and selective cytotoxic efficacy against cancer cell lines compared to normal cells.
