The Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a panel discussion entitled: "Beyond Mechanical Ventilation: A New Hope for Patients with Spinal Cord Injuries."
The session included a lecture presented by the faculty member Mustafa Mufeed Abdulhameed, in which he highlighted that severe cervical spinal cord injuries pose a significant clinical challenge, particularly for patients suffering from long-term dependence on mechanical ventilation due to impaired or absent spontaneous breathing.
The lecture reviewed recent advances in the Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS) technology as a therapeutic alternative that may help reduce dependence on mechanical ventilators or eliminate their need altogether in eligible candidates.
Furthermore, the lecture addressed the mechanism of action of this technology, patient selection criteria, and surgical procedures required for system implantation, along with clinical evidence concerning its efficacy, safety, and positive impact on patients' quality of life and rehabilitation outcomes.
