The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a panel discussion entitled:
(Multi-Target Pharmacology and Network Pharmacology)
The panel discussion featured a lecture delivered by Dr. Ahmed Hamish, in which he explained that multi-target pharmacology and network pharmacology aim to design drugs or drug combinations that affect multiple molecular targets and biological pathways simultaneously, rather than relying on the "one drug – one target" principle. Complex diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders originate from interconnected networks of molecules and pathways rather than a defect in a single protein.
This approach increases therapeutic efficacy, reduces the risk of drug resistance, facilitates drug repurposing, and aids in interpreting and predicting unexpected side effects early on. It also enables the study of herbal medicines and drug combinations through modeling interactions among drugs, targets, and diseases, thereby supporting the development of more effective and safer treatments.
