The College of Pharmacy discusses the efficacy of hyaluronic acid in wound healing.

The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah discussed a Master's thesis entitled "The Efficacy of Combined Therapy of Hyaluronic Acid and Mupirocin in Skin Burn Healing in Rats."

The thesis, presented by the graduate student Atyaf Ali Faisal Abdulnabi, investigated the effect of a composite hydrogel combining Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Mupirocin (MUP) in accelerating the healing of third-degree skin burns in rats, by comparing its therapeutic efficacy against each single agent individually as well as a negative control group.

The results revealed that the combined treatment (MUP+HA) achieved significant improvement in burn wound healing, demonstrated by an increased percentage of wound contraction, alongside potent antibacterial efficacy shown by a marked reduction in bacterial load and colony counts.
The study also demonstrated notable histological enhancements, as the combined formulation promoted collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and re-epithelialization, coupled with a mitigated inflammatory response compared to the control group.
Furthermore, the findings confirmed that the composite gel induced favorable modulation in immunohistochemical biomarkers by suppressing TNF-α expression and regulating VEGF and IL-10 levels in alignment with the completion of the wound healing stages.
The clinical significance of this research lies in the potential utility of the MUP+HA composite gel as a promising topical candidate for burn management, owing to its ability to synergistically integrate the robust antibacterial coverage of mupirocin with the tissue-regenerative properties of hyaluronic acid.
