The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah has successfully defended a Master's thesis entitled:
"Design of Experiment-Based Development of Polymeric Nano-Hydrogels for Ocular Delivery Using Olopatadine Hydrochloride as a Drug Model"
The thesis, presented by student Fatima Raed Mohammed, involved the development of a polymeric nano-hydrogel based on bovine serum albumin and chitosan for the sustained ocular delivery of Olopatadine Hydrochloride. The study employed a Quality by Design (QbD) methodology combined with Design of Experiments (DoE) to identify influential formulation variables and optimise the final composition. The physicochemical characteristics of the nano-hydrogel, alongside drug loading efficiency and drug release profiles, were thoroughly evaluated.
The study aimed to develop an optimised nano-hydrogel for the sustained ocular delivery of Olopatadine Hydrochloride, applying the Quality by Design approach to achieve a formulation with desirable nano-scale properties and controlled drug release — thereby prolonging drug residence time on the ocular surface, minimising rapid drainage compared to conventional eye drops, and providing a promising nanosystem for sustained ocular drug delivery.
