Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The Department of Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a seminar titled "Obesity: What Should We Know?".
The seminar included a lecture delivered by the faculty member Noor Hamid, in which she explained that obesity is a chronic medical condition resulting from the excessive accumulation of fat in the body, which can negatively affect general health. She clarified that obesity is not merely an increase in weight but is linked to many health and metabolic problems that significantly affect human quality of life.
She added that the primary causes of obesity include nutritional factors, lifestyle, genetics, and hormonal reasons, noting that it increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high cholesterol, joint problems, and certain types of cancer.
The lecture also emphasized that adopting a healthy lifestyle and engaging in physical activity significantly aids in prevention, and some cases may require medical treatment such as weight-loss medications or surgical interventions like gastric sleeve surgery.
