Pharmacognosy

Natural drugs are considered the oldest & the main source of pharmacy practice since the first decades. The word "pharmacognosy" is derived from the Greek words; "pharmacon" which means "drug" and "gnosis" which means knowledge. The department deals with all the natural products whether they are of plant, animal or marine origin being the primary sources of medicines. Medicinal plants constitutes the most important group of natural products, so the department focuses on teaching the methods of their cultivation, collection and storage as well as their classification and identification in the entire or powdered forms. The active constituents of the plants are well studied concerning their isolation in pure form, their chemical structure as well as their medicinal uses. The department also deals with the different systems of the alternative and herbal medicine. In addition it teaches the different modern techniques of biotechnology for production of drugs such as tissue culture, and genetic engineering. Researches of staff members of the department are concerned with medicinal plants especially those growing in Iraq to discover their active constituents that may help in defeating different diseases.
